VAD, the Flemish center of expertise on alcohol and other drugs, coordinates most of the Flemish organizations that deal with the issues of alcohol, illegal drugs, psychoactive medication, gaming and gambling.

VAD wants to educate the public from a health and welfare perspective and improve the expertise of intermediaries about the handling of alcohol and other drugs.

CGG Waas & Dender (Centre for Mental Health Care), team prevention tobacco, alcohol & other drugs.

There are 11 Centers for Mental Health Care with a prevention team in Flanders.


MAIN ROLES:
  • We implement prevention programs developed by VAD (the Flemisch centre of expertise on alcohol and other drugs) by:
  • Conducting training to professionals/practitioners in multiple settings (school, workplace, recreational settings, criminal justice, local community, social work, health care…)
  • Coaching organizations in developing a smoking, alcohol and drugs policy
  • We support and coach the local drug prevention workers in our region to implement prevention methods and programs directly to the target population. We collaborate with them to assess the needs in our region. We support the local drug prevention workers in local meetings with stakeholders where we introduce prevention materials.
  • We focus on legal (tobacco, alcohol medication) and illegal drugs; gaming and gambling

We focus on regional level. Together with the other Centers for Mental Health Care with a team prevention, we have a nationwide scope in Flanders.

HOWEST teaches at the bachelor degree of Applied Health and Lifestyle Sciences in the university of applied sciences, campus Bruges. The bachelor degree of applied health sciences tutors and coaches health/wellbeing promotion and substance misuse/addiction prevention professionals of the future. This new professional career/training is new (4 years) in Flanders. Students start their professional career with an internship as health promotor in enterprises, not for profit organizations, educational institutions, care and counseling organizations, leisure organizations (e.g. sports clubs/federations, scouting, etc), night time economy, etc.

Education of future health promotion and prevention professionals, including prevention advisors as required by law for bigger enterprises.

De Sleutel is an institution embedded in a non-profit organisation of the Brothers of Charity. It is aimed at care, prevention, employment and research in the field of drugs and drug addiction problems and dependency. We help drug addicts to optimize self-realization and to reintegrate in our community. De Sleutel has several local departments each with their specific interventions (Antwerp, Bruges, Ghent, Eeklo, Mechelen). However, the prevention team works supra-regionally and covers the whole of Flanders, Brussels, Limburg.

The Prevention Team is financed by the government to train teachers in life skills (primary schools and nursery schools) and drug prevention in secondary schools.

De Sleutel has developed 3 methodologies:

De Sleutel is being coordinated by the Flemish agency for care and health and works closely with VAD and Gezond Leven (partner organizations). We are an organization that connects as far as possible with our target audience (teachers) by giving workshops.

  • The prevention projects mainly focus on training social skills from the infant class till the end of primary education. Social skills help build resistance to drug use.
  • At the level of secondary education, we provide support for establishing and applying a policy of drug prevention.

There is one central institution active in the field of drugprevention; VAD that delivers expertise to 11 regional prevention centres in the Flamish region. Zorggroep Zin is one of these regional centres.

On the other hand you also have “Field” organisations like “De Sleutel” who develop interventions for certain settings like education.

In some cities and in some municipalities combined there’s also a local prevention service, sometimes in cooperation with the regional centres, sometimes operating independently.

For Brussels and the Wallonia there are other institutions active: Fedito BXL and Fedito Wallone.


MAIN ROLES:

Zorggroep Zin delivers ambulatory drug counseling for people in Limburg. Besides the counseling service Zorggroep Zin also organizes a prevention service (14 coworkers) for the 42 municipalities combined in 8 first-line zones. Every first-line zone has dedicated prevention Expert. The 8 prevention Experts are supported by 5 colleagues. There is also one expert working in the project Safe ‘n Sound.

Every regional prevention expert coaches 4-7 municipalities in the local alcohol and drug prevention policy. They are also involved in the realization of the planned interventions regarding training, coaching, consult and low threshold information activities. The prevention experts also respond to local needs concerning alcohol and drug problems by addressing a suitable offer taking EB interventions in account. This offer can be an existing offer when there is one, or a new offer if non the existing suit the need formulated.
