MAIN ROLES:
In the context of national public policies on drugs, the coordination of development and implementation of public policies on drug use prevention is carried out horizontally between different ministries and administrations at national level and vertically, from government to regional and local levels, based on the principle of social responsibility. The responsibility for the general coordination of prevention policies belongs to the National Anti-Drug Agency, a specialized institution within the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which under the law coordinates the response to the drug phenomenon at national level. The vertical coordination of universal, selective programmes, projects, campaigns and interventions, shown by prevention of drug use, at National Anti-Drug Agency level, is carried by the 47 Drug Prevention, Evaluation and Counselling Centers.
THE SCOPE OF ACTIVITIES:
Develop, implement, endorse, authorize, monitor and coordinate, as appropriate, national, regional or local programs and services in the drug demand reduction field.
THE ORGANIZATION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR:
  • Coordinating drug prevention
  • Decision-making in drug prevention (Including development of policies)
  • Advisory role, Funding drug and alcohol prevention
  • Developing drug prevention programmes and/or policies
  • Monitoring substance related problems in order to apply the results to improve drug prevention
  • Monitoring drug prevention interventions or programmes
  • Supervising the implementation of drug prevention - e.g. providing advice and guidance
  • Conducting prevention research e.g. evaluation of drug prevention programmes
  • Epidemiological studies in the general and student population
  • Implementing drug prevention e.g. family- and schoolbased programmes
  • Providing training on substance use prevention
